Bumble bees have been bred in controlled conditions since 1987 in Belgium and since 1988 in Holland.

They in 1988 had been used on 3% of tomato crops, which grew up, 95% in 1991 and 100% in 1992 In the year 2004 even a million of bumblebee colonies were used all over the world and the calculations are that in 2007. 1 500 000 bumble bee colonies will be used.

Bumblebees are more effective than any other pollinator or method of pollinating:

  • Their bodies make the buzz effect – vibrations of 400Hz that are important for fertilization in tomato flower. They fly faster from flower to flower.
  • They fly under all kinds of weather conditions.
  • They are available during the whole year.
  • They are not threatened by parasites.
  • Only a bumble bee can pollinate with enough certainty and quality.
